Ways to Add Details and Level of Details in User Story

Getting the correct information at right time is important for any success. Being agile and having an agile mindset we know the importance of every factor affecting our productivity and success. Not only understanding the importance, the agile mindset continuously works on improving those factors and achieving a higher standard in every area they work in and every aspect of their personality. Considering the user story as the base of the project we know how important it is to have the correct user story and its detailed information at the table while starting the work. In this discussion, we will learn about the ways of adding details to the user stories and what level of information is required in a user story checked by the Product Owners.

Ways of Splitting Details of a User Story


1) Split the Story

The best way to go into deep is to do splitting. More the pieces you have more the detail you can learn from them. The same applies to the user story, splitting the user story into small stories or multiple stories will provide more details hence making it clear for a Product Owner to for selection. It will provide more precise detail when you try to go into every experience and alternate options stepwise. For example, while designing an application for a grocery store it will be a lot easy when you try to evaluate every step you will require to take for selecting and ordering any grocery like apples. This can be done by putting indicators at every detail from start to end. And write it done unless it feels sufficient for a story.

2) Add Acceptance Criteria for the story

The second way for Product Owners to select the best user stories and details in it will involve putting every user story through defined criteria. The criteria will be based on what are the basic added notes and what basic the story must do so that they are accepted by the Product Owners. These acceptance criteria will help to surface the details carried by a user story.

The question further occurs is about when to know the correct way of using either of them.

The tips to select the way are as:


1. For Splitting into stories

When the initial story is large for a single iteration or the prioritization differs not including the acceptance criteria then prefer the splitting option.


2. For Acceptance criteria into stories

When the acceptance criteria are about the same priorities or the acceptance criteria further helps the story to keep it adjusted in a single iteration.

To be a good agile team one must know that both ways are best and should be used accordingly as per the requirement or the Product Owner may use both at the same time to add more and very precise details to the user story. As we know the ways to add the details in the user story we will move towards our other question of knowing the level of details to be added in the story.

When the Product Owner brings the user story to a team without full knowledge of themselves, there are various open issues related to the Product Backlog. It’s always necessary for a Product Owner to understand full details or as much as possible to get clear with the basic idea of bringing it to work before sharing it with your team.

Level of Details for User Story

At the start be sure to share the information as much as it makes the team members say that they have details that help them to barely finish the iteration. They will have enough advanced information for the task for iteration but not so much that can confuse their common sense or remove their creativity for the iteration.

Knowing the right way to get the user story details and adding the right amount of detail in the Product Backlog is an indicator that the Product Owner and team members have completely gasped at the idea of being agile and working with the right agile mindset.
